Saturday Game Night Recap - Battle of Bunker Hill and Planet of the Apes

The main two games of the evening were a game of Muskets and Tomahawks and a sci-fi game. The Muskets and Tomahawks game's scenario was the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major battle of the American War of Independence. Robert Scholtz put on the game for five players, three playing the British and two players playing the patriots. Muskets and Tomahawks is game designed for skirmish battles occurring during the late 18th century, but for this game the scale was upped to simulate the larger forces involved in the battle. The scenario had the British attempting to capture the patriot redoubt on top of Breed's Hill on the Charlestown peninsula that overlooked Boston and Boston harbor. The British players had to capture the hill while suffering as few casualties as possible. As the game played, the patriots had the early advantage being able to fire at the attacking British without suffering hardly any casualties. But when the British reached the redoubt, their superior moral allowed them to press their attack and force the patriots to retreat.

The sci-fi game was put on by David Brewer and was loosely based on the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. David's game used a modified version of rules from Bolt Action, the World War II small unit skirmish game. David's games are known for their great terrain and this game was no different. The game had a great variety of terrain including a river and several hills and mountains, along with jungle and other terrain, which made the game that much more fun to play. The game was based on the movie and was set in the Forbidden Zone on planet Earth with the apes trying to capture a rescue team from earth's past who were there to bring back survivors of that ill-fated space mission led by Captain Taylor from centuries past. The inclusion of dinosaurs added extra color to the game.
